Pilot project De Watergroep (Belgium)

De Watergroep supplies water through a network of over 34,000 km in Flanders (Belgium) and serves around 3 million customers and hundreds of companies. Their mission is to supply high-quality drinking water at an affordable price and ensure economically and ecologically responsible management. To attain this, one of their goals is to reduce their actual non-revenue water of 20% by proactively searching for leaks using advanced data analysis techniques.

The water supply network of De Watergroep is managed through 282 permanently monitored DMAs. Currently, De Watergroep is using night flows and yearly water balances to target priorities for active leakage control interventions.

The pilot project took place in the DMA area Kortessem/Bilzen-Beverst which consists of about 200 km pipes and contains 6 flow meters and 9600 connections.
HydroScan analysed the historical flow data over a period of three years and retroactively applied the LeakRedux® technology.
HydroScan clearly demonstrated that the volume of non-visible water leakages increased steadily over time.
A timely intervention as predicted by LeakRedux® would have reduced the overall water loss by about 50%.
Economical evaluations predict a return on investment of less than 3 years once the LeakRedux® technology is fully deployed.
