Drinking water network modelling

Reference case Wortegem-Petegem

Introduction to the challenge

Problems were encountered in the existing drinking water network in Wortegem-Petegem. The network of the Elsegem sub-region is highly vulnerable to upstream disruptions. Therefore, a proposal was made to relocate the main supply, but the implications of this intervention were difficult to assess. Furthermore, the industrial park includes a large consumer who is responsible for short, high peaks that cause pressure peaks in the network. That is why an operational drinking water model was developed for the area. Such a model allows on the one hand to verify the sensitivity of the system and on the other hand to simulate different scenarios and proposed solutions.

Our approach

Drinking water network modelling
Step-by-step modelling:
  • In a first stage, a drinking water model of the Wortegem-Petegem network was developed in Infoworks WS from a connected database. Both the connectivity and the necessary network parameters were checked and supplemented where necessary.
  • Flow measurements at the water supply pipeline are statistically processed and used as input for the system.
  • In data, individual consumption data were gathered and input into the model.
  • The network was subsequently verified based on pressure and flow measurements in the system.
  • The result is a verified drinking water model that can be used to examine the impact of scenarios.

Our solution

Optimal scenario for future water supply

The verified model provides insight into the hydraulic behaviour of the network and allows potential bottlenecks to be located. The output consisted of pressure maps and maps with the simulated load losses per pipeline. To this end, simulations were run based on both average and peak demand situations. The same pressure maps were created for the different scenarios and compared to the existing situation in order to obtain an optimal scenario for the future water supply in the area.
