Cost-effective organisation of operational sewerage and drinking water management

Reference case Farys

Introduction to the challenge

Within the Codam project (Centre for Public Domain Asset Management), we have supported the inter-municipal association Farys in all aspects of its operational sewerage and drinking water management. This comprises, for example, the collection and structuring of network information, and the analysis of this information to serve as basis for conducting hydraulic analyses of the sewerage and drinking water networks. The relevant data are also made available via a viewer application that enables visualisation and querying of the information for a wide range of users.

Our approach

Centralizing information about the sewerage and drinking water infrastructure as basis for operational water management

Cost-effective organisation of operational sewerage and drinking water management
Dans le cadre de cet accord-cadre, un grand nombre d'activités différentes sont menées dans le cadre d'un programme opérationnel pour la gestion évolutive de l'infrastructure de réseau :
  • The network information of the sewerage and drinking water networks is centralised in operational databases. For parts of the network for which such information is not yet available, additional site measurements are taken which, following a quality check, are also incorporated into the database.
  • This database is also continuously updated to take into account completed projects and new operational information. The data contained in this database is then used for the construction of operational hydraulic models of the sewerage network on the one hand and the drinking water network on the other.
  • These provide an insight into the current hydraulic operation of these systems and allow for prior screening of new projects and optimisation of their design.
  • In addition, they are used as a basis for the development of a long-term vision on water discharge in the form of RWA (stormwater drainage) plans.
  • The operational database is also used to steer the operational sewerage management.
  • In a first phase, inspection programmes are compiled to examine the state of the infrastructure on a priority basis.
  • These inspection data are additionally processed in the database and then used to provide advice on further follow-on actions (e.g. renovation projects, increased monitoring, sludge clean-up, etc.).
  • The result is an overall action plan for infrastructure management, which is used to steer internal services and external service providers.
  • All relevant information is also visualised in a viewer application tailor-made to the customer's needs. This web application allows a wide group of users to visualise and query the available information in a structured manner.

Our solution

Cost-effective organisation of operational sewerage and drinking water management based on the actual state of the infrastructures

The implementation of the Codam project allows Farys to organise the management in a more structured and cost-effective manner and to present the results in a graphic format to its partners.

The benefits
